Rainy Days in Phuket
Phuket is a tropical paradise, and there is plenty of sunshine all year round. This is not to say that the weather is always going to be perfect for lining on the beach. Thailand gets more than its fair share of rain and when the skies open up the water can pour down hard. The worst of the rain occurs during the wet season from the end of May until early November. On most of these days there will be a few hours of sunshine, but there can be days when the rain just never stops. When this happens it is best to find something indoors to do in Phuket.
Things To Do In Phuket When It Is Raining
There is no reason to feel bored in Phuket even on rainy days. As the novelist Richard Bach once wisely mused:
In order to live free and happily you must sacrifice boredom. It is not always an easy sacrifice.
People do have to take action if they want to avoid boredom or a rainy day, but there is still plenty for them to do in Phuket when the skies open such as:
Learn to Cook Thai Food
Learning to cook Thai food is not only an enjoyable experience, but it also means that people will have gained knowledge that they benefit from once they go home. Thai food has become extremely popular across the globe, and the ability to cook it is sure to add a new dimension to mealtimes. The dishes that people learn to prepare will be a lasting reminder of their time in Phuket. There are many places on the island where people can find cooking classes. Venues such as Pum Thai Restaurant and Cooking School and Phuket Thai Cookery School offer one day classes.
Visit One of the Large Department Stores
The shopping opportunities in Phuket rival that of a large city. In recent years there have been a number of department stores that have opened their doors on the island. The biggest of these is Central Festival which is situated on the outskirts of Phuket Town. There is over 120,000 square meters of shopping space and it that is more than enough to keep people busy for a few hours. Those who are staying in Patong can also visit the massive department store there called_ Jungceylon_
Train at a Muay Thai Camp
An increasingly common reason for people to come to Phuket is to learn Muay Thai. This is the national sport of Thailand and some of the best camps are located on the island. This martial art can be practiced by people of practically any age, and there is no need to be super fit. A rainy day is the perfect time to go for an introduction lesson. It is also possible to just visit to watch other people train or to use the gym equipment.
Walk Around Phuket Aquarium
If the rain has not put people off the sight of water they might want to visit Phuket Aquarium. It is situated in Phuket Town, and it offers a relatively cheap way to spend a few hours – it is particularly good for families.
Visit Phuket Fantasea Show
Phuket Fantasea is a cultural theme park that offers an impressive number of activities to keep people entertained. Most of the action takes place indoors so there is no need to worry about dark skies. Since this theme park opened in 1988 it has become the largest attraction on the island. It doesn’t open until the early evening, but it provides hours of entertainment.
One of the nice things about going on holiday is that it gives people a chance to unwind. This is important because there is plenty of research into the dangers of stress. If visitors wish to take some inner peace back home with them they might want to learn some meditation. Thailand is respected around the world as the home of some of the most accomplished meditation masters, and there are plenty of opportunities to pick up this important skill during a trip to Phuket. Not only might learning meditation allow the individual to deal better with stress when they return home, but it could also put them on the path to enlightenment.
Go to the Cinema
It might seem strange to travel all the way to Thailand and spend time in the cinema, but this is a good option on a rainy day. Many of the Thai films will have English subtitles, and this can be a good way to get a better understanding of the local culture. The latest international movies will also be available. The large department stores all have cinemas, and these are all nicely furnished and make use of the best in audio visual technology. Visitors may also be pleased to find that the cost of going to the movies is much cheaper than it is in western countries – the confectionary counter tends not to be as well stocked though.
Visit a Bookstore
There are new and secondhand book stores to be found in various locations on the island. Phuket Town is probably the best destination for book lovers. Many of the guest houses and hotels will also have small libraries from which visitors can borrow reading material.
Relax in a Cafe with a Book
Probably the most relaxing way of spending a rainy day in Phuket is to visit a café. People can then spend the day either reading newspapers or a good book. Of course it is also possible to visit one of the many bars on the island and do the same – if people are so inclined.
